I’ve just been to a wine tasting. I tried 14 wines. I liked none of them.

It wasn’t that any of them was intrinsically bad per se (actually, that’s unfair, one of them really was), they were just all decidedly meh.

G-FORCE German wine fair is currently still going on in the basement of a record shop in Soho. I have come home because I wasn’t enjoying it. I’m aware that a lot of the wines we tried were from wine makers looking for an importer, but last time I tried a German wine looking for an importer I nearly became a wine importer. Given that previous experience I was really looking forward to an entire festival of undiscovered gems of German wine.

WRONG. It was ALL BAD.

That’s slightly unfair. There was one wine (out of 14, before we just left) that I’d consider buying maybe. It was a Pinot Noir from somewhere (in Germany). The rest were just entirely lacklustre, over priced off-dry Rieslings*. While I’m the first to admit I’m not the biggest fan of off-dry Rieslings, I still feel this wasn’t great, even by off-dry Riesling standards.

It’s an odd experience leaving a wine fair early and entirely uninspired by anything. Tonight I left a wine fair early and entirely uninspired. I’m not sure what to make of it (other than to semi-tipsy rant on here, obviously). G-Force wine fair is going on right now. I will not be going back next year.
